and DNA, baby, that spells DNA

On Thursday, my extended lab surprised me with a baby shower. It really blew me away - I'm not surprised easily, but this time they really got me. You have to understand my lab to know why this was such a shocker - we don't tend to do many social events, and if we do, I'm usually the one to plan them. So when I went to a supposed research meeting with a collaborator only to find a table full of food, party games, and gifts, I was floored. Stephanie and Brenda devised the whole thing and I believe that Yash and Jing took charge on this side of campus. Anyway, thanks to everyone who planned and celebrated with me! Steph took a ton of pics, but I don't have the files yet - until then, here are some camera phone snapshots - cutting the cake and the decorations.

I also wanted to share a little story about Gabe's first book. That's right: the first book to grace his bookshelf is Haskell Programming! It showed up with all of the other baby gifts from Meg & Lucas and apparently Lucas picked it out especially for us :) Of course, Gabe really has no chance but to at least be interested in the topic, what with my casual interest in programming, Mike's more serious interest, and the fact that Meg & Lucas are both employed in the industry. He's already a nerd in the making!

E & M, The next picture you post better have Gabe in it!
Love, J4
P.S. We want a panoramic of Gabe's nursery - again, with (preferably) Gabe included! Love you sweet peas!
